Benefits of Crypto Donations:

Tax Benefits: Minimize your Tax Burden while Maximizing your Contribution.

The IRS recognizes crypto donations as property, it’s like donating stock.

  • Bypass the capital gains tax you would pay if you sold the assets yourself and donated the proceeds. Example: If you bought $15,000 worth of Bitcoin and sold it for $30,000, you’d owe capital gains tax on $15,000. But if you donated it to PathStone Foundation, you’d avoid a capital gains tax on your donation.
  • You can itemize deductions on your tax return, and claim a fair market value charitable deduction for the tax year in which the gift is made. *Example: Your adjusted gross income is $100,000. If you donate $50,000 of bitcoin by Dec. 31, you may deduct up to $30,000 this year, and possibly write off the remaining $20,000 over the next five years. When donating over $5,000 you must get a qualified appraisal (prices may range between $100 to $600), which can happen after the gift. You have until the tax-filing deadline and need to file Form 8283 for non-cash charitable gifts with your tax return to claim the deduction.

*These hypothetical examples are only for illustrative purposes. The examples do not consider any state or local taxes or the Medicare net investment income surtax.

Security and Privacy Benefits: Protect your Personal Information.

Cryptocurrencies use blockchain technologies and cryptography to encrypt, secure and verify transactions and proof of ownership. Plus, their systems are not tied to a central authority, this way they can better protect data and user privacy.

Donation Impact Benefits: More Bang for your Buck.

Crypto donations can be cheaper for non-profits to process because credit card processing fees can be quite high (ranging anywhere from 2.2 to 7.5 %). Plus, processing times for crypto donations can be only about 10 minutes while credit cards, ACH transfers, and checks can take days and sometimes even weeks to process.
